Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
1 Peter 3:3,4
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
1 Timothy 2:9,10

Your Clothes & Your Heart

Dear Seventh-day Adventist Sisters,

Welcome! There is something here for you, no matter where you are in your walk with Christ. Because of their love for Jesus, and their desire to please Him, many Seventh-day Adventist women are turning from the immodest fashions of the world, and moving toward modesty.

This web site has been prepared by committed Seventh-day Adventists for the purpose of providing you with inspired counsel from the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy on the subject of dress for Christian women. We endeavor to present a balanced message with an abundance of supporting evidence. Also, this site will bring you encouragement as well as support through testimonials, practical tips and links.

Please keep in mind that the purpose of this web site is not to condone or condemn others for their choices regarding their appearance. Rather, this material is provided so that each one may individually apply the principles that God has given us.

Before reading further, we encourage you not to leave this site until you have checked out the RESOURCES page, the heart of this web site.

But first, important questions for the reader to consider are, “Do I know for sure that I have been converted? Is love for God a burning passion in my heart? Is my highest desire to please the Lord in all things?” If you are not a mature and committed Seventh-day Adventist Christian, the first thing you need to read is The Importance of the Inward Adorning. Also, you will find wonderful spiritual food on AudioVerse. When your heart is prepared by the love of Jesus, then you will be ready for the meat of the Word on this site.

Dear sisters, we are in a war! We are all lining up on one side or the other. Our enemy is trying to trick us into fighting on his side, by seducing us into copying his vile values. On the other hand, Jesus is doing all He can to lovingly enable us to become transformed into His image.

The opposing agendas are laid out: Satan's agenda for women is pride and immodesty. God's agenda for His daughters is purity and holiness. Our outward appearance in the way we dress reveals whose agenda we are following. We may have been unaware of the issues, but it's high time for us to wake up.

The enemy loves to see those who claim to be God's daughters walking around in immodest clothing, especially in church. He is thrilled when he can use professed Christian sisters as tools to tempt their brothers. Satan exults when God's daughters dress like the world. He wants to keep us ignorant of God's principles.

It's time for a revolution among Seventh-day Adventist women. It's time for us to band together in revolt against the enemy's agenda. It's time for us to open our eyes to see how Satan has sucked us into his snare. It's time for us to enjoy the spiritual benefits of modest dressing that God has waiting for us!

Our dear Sister Ellen White, in talking about the various problems with following fashion, wrote, “Such madness concerning the changing fashions of the world should call forth an army of reformers who would take their position for simple and plain attire.” RH, March 31, 1891. The Modesty Movement is just that, an army of reformers who are taking our position for God's beautiful plan for our dress, not Satan's plan. Would you like to join us?

WHAT IS THE MODESTY MOVEMENT?

Perhaps you've heard of “dress reform.” This term is used in the Spirit of Prophecy to address the problems with following the fashions of the world, be they immodesty, extravagance or unhealthfulness. While the particulars may have been different in her time, the principles are still valid today. And these principles go much deeper than the external. These inspired principles deal with the heart issue.

That's our greatest need, to have a heart responsive to God's will. Since pride is our HUGE problem, it's really a struggle for us to be willing to listen to God. Satan has figured out an effective way to derail us and separate us from God. He uses our PRIDE to cause us to stumble over the way we dress. And this is our NUMBER ONE problem as women, at least for most of us! Sister White declared that “Obedience to fashion is pervading our Seventh-day Adventist churches and is doing more than any other power to separate our people from God.” 4T 648.

We may have a hard time accepting that, because we may not have been aware we even had a problem in this area. Pride even blocks our willingness to receive and apply truth. So if our pride issue is undetected and unchallenged, Satan has us.

Modesty Movement is another term to describe inward and outward Dress Reform. It's all about preparing for Christ's soon appearing, inwardly and outwardly. It's about the deep heart transformation that makes external compliance with His will a joyous experience. Our love for Jesus leads us to surrender every area of our lives to Him, which includes our appearance.

The main focus of our affections must be Jesus, and Jesus alone. Loving Him, serving Him, obeying Him, dressing for Him; He is worthy of our continual praise and adoration. Our highest delight is in reflecting His character, wearing His robe of righteousness.

Perhaps the best counsel that we have been given on dress reform is summed up in this sentence: "When they really desire an article of dress, or some ornament or convenience, do they lay the matter before the Lord in prayer to know if his Spirit would sanction this..." {RH, December 6, 1881} We should be willing to take each desire that we have before the Lord, and ask Him if it is pleasing to Him. If we will do that, He will reveal His will to us, and show us how He wants us to dress.

Dear sisters, if we are seriously planning to be ready for Jesus to come, then we are part of the Remnant. As Remnant sisters, we must be clothed with the heavenly Raiment. As we kneel before the Lord each morning, asking Him to clothe us with His robe of righteousness, He will empower us to clothe our bodies with Remnant Raiment, the pure and simple clothing of the saints.

What a thrill this journey with Jesus is, as He leads us ever closer to His will, so that we may not participate in any way with the enemy's plan for us.

The heart of this web site is the RESOURCES page, where you will find a wealth of information by various authors and presenters on the subject of Christian modesty.

As you read through this web site, and feel your heart responding to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, we invite you to join us as ambassadors of this worthy cause, the Modesty Movement. When the Holy Spirit captures the hearts of God's daughters, and brings them to complete surrender in every area of our lives, we believe this will make a huge spiritual impact on God's Church. We are confident that the glory of His righteousness will shine through these feeble feminine instruments in such a way as to bring about a revival of purity and holiness. Will you join with us in making a commitment to your Lord that you will seek to please Him in all things?

Be sure to put FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Importance of the Inward Adorning

"The remnant that purify their souls by obeying the truth gather strength from the trying process, exhibiting the beauty of holiness amid the surrounding apostasy." 2 SM 380

" 'If any man will come after me,' said Christ, 'let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.' Self denial and self-sacrifice will mark the Christian's life. Evidence that the taste is really converted will be seen in the dress of all who walk the narrow path of holiness, the path cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in." {6MR 160.4}

"Christians should not neglect to search the Scriptures on these points. They need to understand that which the Lord of heaven appreciates in even the dressing of the body. Those who are earnest in seeking for the grace of Christ will heed the precious words of instruction inspired of God. Even the style of the apparel will express the truth of the gospel. Their dress bears its testimony to their own family, to the church and the world, that they are being purified from vanity and selfishness. They demonstrate that they are not idolaters." {6MR 161.1}

"As for me, I would like to thank each and every young lady who is defying the cultural "normal" and dressing modestly. Because I am saving my heart and body for my future wife, every time I see a young woman doing the same, that encourages me. I see that they are seeking to protect their brothers in the Lord from stumbling, and may the young men committed to purity do no less for our sisters in Christ. Don't stop ladies! There ARE men who appreciate you, though they may be few, and far between.  Even if there were no men who appreciated the stand that you are taking, God does and that is most important! Press on!" --Josh
