Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
1 Peter 3:3,4
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
1 Timothy 2:9,10

The Religion of Fashion

Fashion is now a religion! A blogger writes: “ 2010 is the year of the new religion… Fashion. So with that in mind I have created the 10 fashion commandments every woman needs to abide by this Spring/Summer:” He then lists 10 fashion rules that mock God's holy commandments. This is pure blasphemy!

One does not need to look very far to find out that many do in fact worship fashion. Many openly declare it. “Fashion is a Religion; Vogue is the Bible.” Others reveal it in their appearance.

Can a Christian worship Fashion and God at the same time? One writes: “ Many Christians' beliefs about modesty are also continually at odds with current dictates of fashion and the mass media.” Source Jesus said, “No man can serve two masters.”

Let us ask, Who is Fashion's master? Who is behind it all? How is Fashion established? A website defining how fashion works explains: “Working five or six months ahead of the season, the press attends fashion shows presenting designer collections; the media will then give editorial coverage to trends they think their readership is interested in. Store buyers work many months in advance of the season to place orders with manufacturers for styles they think their customers will want to buy. Celebrities and other opinion leaders (socialites and other glitterati) are usually the first to sport new looks, spurring the buying public into accepting emerging trends. So everyone from big-name designers to celebrities may be behind influencing the direction fashion will go in.”

So, fashion designers originate the style, it is modeled at fashion shows and then promoted by the media, then it goes to the stores, and the celebrities spur on the buyers. But who really is behind all of this? Who is directing these people?

We are told that Satan is “the instigator and prime mover in the ever-changing, never-satisfying decrees of fashion.” Because fashion is created by those who are subject to Satan, the “world” which is the godless majority who follow Satan, we see that the fashions accepted by society are truly originated by the devil. Can we follow fashion and still follow God? The answer can be none other than a resounding NO!

Fashion is an effective tool of devil to accomplish many things. What are some of these things he accomplishes with fashion?

Fashion causes its followers to:

  • Spend time, energy and interest on worshipping fashion
  • Compromise our moral standards
  • Stir up pride, bring glory to self
  • Take money from God's cause
  • Cause social strife and competition
  • Arouse lust and immorality
  • Steal worship from God

God's transforming power is ever upward, holier, higher, leading us to become more like Christ. Satan's changing fashion trends ever downward, more degrading, more demoralizing, more wicked. We are not ignorant of Satan's deceptive devices, because we know he works through stealth and trickery.

Satan has ever mixed truth with error in his efforts to deceive. In most false religions, gems of truth are taught, which attract the seekers. But the deadly error with which they are mixed are designed to poison their souls. Error mixed with truth is always more dangerous than straight error.

In the religion of Fashion, Satan also mixes the good with the bad. Not all styles introduced by the fashion designers are bad. Some are good, and appropriate for a godly Christian.

The key to not being snared by Fashion is to consciously dress by principle, not by Fashion's trends, because if one follows fashion's declining trends, it will inevitably corrupt ones morals.

Satan tells his subjects, the fashion designers, to create ever-changing fashions. He has a purpose in this continual change. One of the main reasons for fashion's continual change is to cause to confusion, which disguises the direction these changes are leading to.

If a downward trend is stretched out over several generations, it is not readily recognizable as a snare of the devil. That is why it is so important for Christians to not give in one degree to Satan's downward pull, even if it's only a slight of raising the hemline. Because as soon as you compromise with one trend, the next one will be that much easier.

This ever-changing whirl of fashions takes a rather circuitous route, so that those who are following it become caught off guard. The shocking scene of one generation becomes the yawn of the next, who are now tantalized by new fleshly revelations.

Think about these fashion trends starting around the early 1900s. Hemlines started rising and lowering quickly. Satan has a reason for this. He gets people used the idea of seeing an immodest fashion, and then he retracts it, to ease the troubled conscience. The next time around, it's more readily accepted. If you take a look at the fashions over the years, you will see this played out many times. A daring fashion appears, with much flesh revealed, then a more modest fashion follows it. However, each time the fashions cycle through this change, the modest cycle is more immodest that the previous cycle. But because it is much more modest than the daring fashion that preceded it, nobody seems to notice the downward trend. That's how Satan is using the ever-changing fashions to pull society right down into the moral sewer.

Remember the miniskirt of the 1960s. Now, that was a shocking fashion if there ever was one! It had a overall numbing effect on the morals of society. The vast majority of the young girls in society obediently accepted it. But then it went out of style. So now skirts were more modest. But what happened was that every one who had accepted the miniskirt had compromised their morals so they were primed to accept other demoralizing fashions as the years rolled on.

The focus of revealed body parts shifts as the fashions change. Short skirts give way to longer skirts, but then bare backs, shoulders, or midriffs appear. Then the emphasis is on tight, with flashing slits which can be more tantalizing than mini skirts. The midriffs disappear and the low rise tight jeans appear. Now it seems the plunging necklines are everywhere. It's all part of the game. If Satan can just keep our attention on fashion, instead of on principle, he can persuade the followers comply with its decrees. If he doesn't succeed in one downward cycle, perhaps the next one will do the trick.

Because immodest fashion are interspersed with more modest ones, like error mixed with truth, the collective conscience of society becomes seared. These changing trends rise and fall like the tide, but with each new wave the moral shore recedes. The world can't see it, because their moral standards have become weakened by obeying fashion. Satan has pulled society into the depths of moral sewage, and most of us, even in the church, are totally oblivious to this tragedy!

How are we, as God's children, going to avoid falling prey to Satan's fashion trap? First of all, we need to listen to God's counsel about the dangers of fashion. If we don't believe God, and recognize that following fashion is a satanically-inspired pursuit, we will surly be deceived.

Let's think this through. Was Satan behind the fashion trends to raise the hemlines of women's skirts for the last 100 years? Most decidedly he was. But one can still find skirts with hemlines around the ankle. And they are in style. Why would not Christians choose these skirts over the shorter skirts?

Was Satan behind the plunging necklines that have become very common? How could we deny that he has instigated them? Yet, there are beautiful blouses and tops available with modest necklines, and which are not too tight or revealing. Surly, the godly women will choose these over the immodest worldly styles.

Our enemy has been brainwashing society for over 100 years, tainting our vision with vile fashions. Every living person, at least in Western society, has now become thoroughly immersed in this demoralizing process as satanically inspired fashions meet our eyes everywhere we turn. As we have been bombarded with the prevailing perversion, our very mindset is corrupted. This has largely contributed to the blindness of Laodicea. What we need is a whole new frame of reference.

Not only do we need a heart transplant, we need to have our spiritual eyes anointed with divine eye salve that will remove the scales from our eyes. We need to plead for purity of heart as if our very life depended upon it. We need a moral transformation that is so powerful that we will totally die to depraved, satanically-inspired fashions. We need to strip off our filthy clothes that are the merchandise of devils, and put on the raiment of the remnant.
